The Old Fish Market provides a unique backdrop for your special occasions. It has been carefully restored to preserve its historic beauty while meeting the demands of modern events.
The Old Fish Market, one of the oldest markets in Ghent, was originally located at today's Groentenmarkt.
Relocation to the current Place Saint-Veerle, with the purchase of three houses of the Saint-Veerle chapter by the aldermen of the Keure. This marks the beginning of a new era with a distinctive gatehouse and permanent open-air stables.
The gatehouse, a creation of city architect Adriaan Van Der Linden according to the plans of Arthur Quellyn, is erected in Baroque style. The building is decorated with three statues of sea gods.
A devastating fire severely damages the gatehouse. Only the statue of Neptune, created by Guy Helderberg, survives. New statues by Adolphe Pauli and dolphins by Karel van Poucke replace the lost decorations.
With the 1913 World's Fair coming up, the building receives neo-Gothic facades. A covered market hall is added for the sale of fish, meat and vegetables.
Until 1960, market was held in the current Old Fish Market. Indeed, as the buying habits of the people of Ghent changed, the Marketplace fell into disrepair.
The building underwent several changes of function, including a tire center and a bowling alley until the late 1980s, eventually leading to a period of vacancy .
After a competition launched by the city for a new use, the building is being redesigned as an event venue, a new chapter for the Old Fish Market begins.
Since 2019, 3Square Events has been operating the 4 rooms as a unique event venue.
