History Old Fish Market in Ghent

Origins at the Vegetable Market

The Old Fish Market, one of the oldest markets in Ghent, was originally located at today's Groentenmarkt.

Before 1689

1689

Moving to Sint-Veerleplein

Relocation to the current Place Saint-Veerle, with the purchase of three houses of the Saint-Veerle chapter by the aldermen of the Keure. This marks the beginning of a new era with a distinctive gatehouse and permanent open-air stables.

Construction of the Gatehouse

The gatehouse, a creation of city architect Adriaan Van Der Linden according to the plans of Arthur Quellyn, is erected in Baroque style. The building is decorated with three statues of sea gods.

Fire and recovery

A devastating fire severely damages the gatehouse. Only the statue of Neptune, created by Guy Helderberg, survives. New statues by Adolphe Pauli and dolphins by Karel van Poucke replace the lost decorations.

Neo-Gothic renovation

With the 1913 World's Fair coming up, the building receives neo-Gothic facades. A covered market hall is added for the sale of fish, meat and vegetables.

Market

Until 1960, market was held in the current Old Fish Market. Indeed, as the buying habits of the people of Ghent changed, the Marketplace fell into disrepair.

Function changes

The building underwent several changes of function, including a tire center and a bowling alley until the late 1980s, eventually leading to a period of vacancy .

2010

New destination

After a competition launched by the city for a new use, the building is being redesigned as an event venue, a new chapter for the Old Fish Market begins.

3Square Events

Since 2019, 3Square Events has been operating the 4 rooms as a unique event venue.
